Liu Hong was born in 1956 in Shanxi Province. She was graduated from Fine art department of Sichuan Art Academy in 1982. In 1986, she got a Master degree from the Academy before she started to teach in the Academy. In 1993, she went to Kassel of Germany as a visiting artist before she returned to the Academy in 1994. In 2000, she was transferred to the Chengdu Art School of Sichuan Music Academy as a professor and dean of the Oil Painting department. She is now a member of China Artists Association. She has participated in major exhibitions in China and overseas.

Liu is one of the most famous female artists in China. She is well-trained in realistic techniques and the emotional and conceptual expressional in portrait painting.
