An emerald on matrix, which is weighted 536 kg and with a dimension of 125 cm (length) x 78 cm (height) x 55 cm (width), has arrived Hong Kong from Reunion Island (La Rmunion, a French overseas administration). The gemstone is going to have its worldwide first time exhibition to the public for free at BaoQu Tang Modern Art Gallery on 20th June. The gallery is located at InterContinental Hong Kong hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.


A Rough-State Miracle: Named 'Gift from Heaven'

In the history of gemstone mining, to get an emerald on matrix weighted at 536kg is indeed a miracle. The emerald was extracted from an open-cast mine in Morafeno, which is a small town located in the south-eastern region of Madagascar, in July 2007 using the traditional mining method. Usually, the dynamite used to extract emerald breaks the matrix in numerous small pieces. However, as unbelievable as it may seem, the gemstone was remained intact and weighted 536kg. This discovery breaks the record in the gemstone mining industry and is really a rough-state miracle. With its fantastic jade-green colour and translucency, emerald of various sizes glitter against the black background colour of its mother matrix. Together with its perfect shape, the gemstone looks like the after-spring-raining green forests that spread over Reunion Island. You have to admire the miracle of nature. This gemstone is named ‘Gift from Heaven’ (Shaw Tian Pai Liu) as a thanksgiving to the blessing from heaven.
