Overview

Oil Painting is one of the most common yet influential kinds of media in Western Art History. Western painters excel in recreating the texture of objects through the demonstration of light and shadow. They emphasize on attaining the outward appearance by the shape as well as conveying the verve within. From ancient to present, Western painting represents a continuous tradition from antiquity. Until the 19th century, oil paintings were primarily concerned with representational and classical modes of expression, such as historical and religious themes, while landscape, still life and portraits are also popular subjects. Thereafter, more modern and conceptual forms gained favor, and their progressive concepts provide a road to the contemporary art.
